Auto-translate
Read articles in your language with automatic translation, or use it to start a translation.
Updated on 6 October 2026
Automatic translation works in two ways:
-
On the fly, for readers
-
As a starting point, for contributors who translate an article
On-the-fly translation
Each user chooses their content languages, in order of preference:
-
Click your profile picture in the top right corner, then click "Settings".
-
Open "Preferences" and find "Content languages". The first language is your favourite language.
When you open an article, Elium shows it in your favourite language if that version exists. If the article is not available in any of your content languages, a banner offers to translate it, for example: "This content is in French. Do you want to view it in English?". Click "Translate" to read the automatic translation.
Help for contributors
When you translate an article, you can start from an automatic translation and correct it. To learn more, read Translate Article.
How are articles translated?
At Elium, we use European companies whenever possible when a third-party service has to handle your data.
For this feature, we use DeepL to translate your articles. DeepL is a service hosted in Germany, in the European Union.
If you do not want your articles to be sent to this service, a system administrator can disable automatic translation in the security settings.
What languages are supported?
