Elium's Editor

A content block is used to add a specific type of 'section' to your content. You can easily drag and drop these content blocks in a section to add and edit them.

To start using content blocks, first click on the editor (white space). Then you can either click on the "+" icon or type in "/" command to see the drilldown list of available content blocks like shown below.

Text

With a simple but powerful editor, you can add text and paragraphs to the articles. The editor gives you the possibility to write text and format it: insert and manage titles, bold, alignment, etc. You can also add titles, a bulleted list or a numbered list via the "+" button or "/" command.

Callout

Use the callout block to put emphasis on a text to inform or warn users about something. By default, the callout block will display the green information icon. To change from the green icon to the orange icon and vice versa, simply click on the callout icon.

Collapse

Hide a long passage behind a title that readers open only when they need it. The collapse block takes a title and a body, and the body can hold any other block, including images, tables and files.

It suits frequently asked questions, optional detail, and long procedures that would otherwise push the rest of the article out of view.

Files

The file block allows you to add reference documents, powerpoints, excel files, etc. to your article. When you want to add a file, the editor offers you either to drag and drop the file directly into the article or to download the file directly from your computer. You can choose to display your file in condensed view or in extended view using the menu that appears by clicking on the block.

Image

Insert images into your articles and transform your content into an illustrative journey. To insert an image, the process is similar to that of inserting a file. When you select the image, an editing menu is provided. You can choose the position of your image in the article text as well as put a clickable link behind your image. If you place your cursor in the lower right corner of your image, you can resize it.

Link

Display links to external web pages using the "Link" block. The Link block generates a descriptive view of the web page and a link to it. As with the file, you can choose a condensed view of the link or an expanded view. We recommend the extended view for all "rich" links such as YouTube, Vimeo, Google Forms, etc., which automatically generates an integrated reading of the referenced link.

Google documents work the same way. Paste the link to a Google Doc, Sheet, Slides deck or Form, and the expanded view shows the document itself, ready to read or to fill in. Two things to keep in mind:

• The preview only appears for readers who can already open that document in Google. If it is private to you, other people see an empty box.

• A preview is not indexed. Its content does not appear in Elium search, and an AI assistant cannot use it to answer a question. To make the content searchable, import the file instead: see "Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams" below.

Google Drawings, My Maps, Colab and Data Studio do not preview from a link. Use the Embed block with their embed code if you need them inside an article.

Gallery

Use galleries to share a suite of files that describe a subject covered by your article (event photos, file templates, logos in different forms, etc.). Each file can be renamed, reorganised, deleted. Choose a grid or list view. In order to give your gallery more context, you have the possibility to give it a title (Attention, the title of your gallery will not be displayed in table of articles.

A viewer allows you to browse through the files one after the other and each file can be downloaded separately from it.

Drawing

Create a diagram or a sketch directly inside an article with the drawing block. It opens a full drawing editor, based on Excalidraw, with shapes, arrows, text and freehand drawing. The drawing is saved in Elium alongside the article, so there is no third-party account to connect and the content stays on your platform.

You can also build a diagram from Mermaid text instead of drawing it by hand. Paste your Mermaid syntax into the Mermaid option and Elium converts it. Flowcharts, sequence diagrams and class diagrams become editable shapes. Every other Mermaid diagram type is inserted as an image instead, which you cannot edit afterwards.

Use the library panel to install extra shape sets from the public Excalidraw library, or to save your own shapes and reuse them across articles.

Google drive, oneDrive, SharePoint and teams

You can embed a file or a folder from Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams. The process is similar to that of inserting a regular file or image, to the exception that you will be asked to connect your Google Drive or OneDrive account first. Once this first step is done, you will have two options: preview or import.

• Preview: as the name suggests, it will show a preview of the file or folder. The original document will remain in Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams. If changes are made to the original document, it will be reflected on the preview. However, its content will not be indexed and thus not searchable.

• Import: you can import any file from your Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams. It is the preferred option if you want the content to be indexed and searchable. Be aware that with this option, if changes are made on the original document, they will not be replicated on the imported file.

For a Google file you only need to show, pasting its link into a Link block is quicker and needs no connected account: see "Link" above. Use this section when the content has to be searchable in Elium.

article

The articles may themselves contain articles shared within Elium. This possibility allows you to link articles of the same subject between them.

To reference an article, you have three options:

1. Use the dedicated search box to type the name of the article you want to reference.

2. Select the articles you want to add as a reference in your article from your drafts.

3. Select the articles you want to add as a reference in your article from your bookmarks.

Separator

Inserting a separator is a great way to visually structure your content. It will be displayed as shown below.

Quote

The purpose of a quotation is to reinforce or illustrate the impact of a text with an extract, a formulation, etc. With the "Quote" block in Elium, you can easily highlight a quote of your choice. For each of your quotes, you have an editing menu to change the colour of your text, add a hyperlink, etc.

To-do list

Insert checkboxes to keep track of your to-do's. List the different items and save. Once you've accomplished one of the listed tasks, go back to the article to edit and mark it as done. The item will be shown as crossed.

User

Add in your article the profile of one or more users thanks to the dedicated block.

Table

Create tables to structure your information in Elium. Add a row or column with a single click. By clicking on a cell, you will be able to add formatting to your text and also insert hyperlinks. By right-clicking on your table, you will have different additional options: insert or delete rows and columns, look at the properties of the cell/the table or delete the entire table.

Code

This block allows you to write directly into the article in a specific programming language. This block offers 16 different languages such as HTML, Javascript, CSS, C#, etc.

Embed

This block allows you to paste part of a code, generally in the form of an iframe, generated by an external service enabling the most transparent as possible integration (embed) in the elium environment and the Collection that contains it. There are many services, but in particular external forms such as JotForm, Google Form or Typeform come to mind.

Mention

The "@" allows you to mention a user or a space (if you are an administrator or moderator of this one). Using the mention attracts attention and invites the user or members of the space to join the conversation.
