Gardening Tags

Keep the list of tags clean: add, edit, merge, delete and relate tags, and limit hashtags.

Updated on 7 October 2026

Gardening tags means keeping the list of tags clean and consistent: merging duplicates, renaming, moving tags to the right category and deleting unused tags.

Open the Tags page

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right corner, then click "Settings".

  2. In the menu on the left, open "General" and click "Tags".

The page lists the tags with their category, their number of articles and their translation level. Use the search field and the category list to find a tag.

Add tags

  • To add one tag, click "Add a tag", choose its category and write its name in each language.

  • To add several tags, click "Actions", then "Add several tags". Choose the category and write one tag per line, then click "Create".

Edit, merge or delete a tag

Click the three dots at the end of the tag's row.

  • Edit: rename the tag, translate it or move it to another category.

  • Merge: replace the tag with another one. Under "Merge with", choose the tag to keep, then click "Merge". All the articles with the first tag get the second tag, and the first tag is deleted.

  • Delete: delete the tag. Elium warns you if the tag is used in alerts, contribution email addresses, space tabs or templates.

Click "Actions", then "Edit tag relations". Related tags work as synonyms: a search filtered on one tag also finds the articles with the other tag. For example, a search on "sodium chloride" also finds the articles tagged "NaCl".

Limit the creation of hashtags

By default, all users can create hashtags. On a large platform, this can lead to too many tags. Click "Actions", then "Hashtag settings", and choose the "Minimum role" for creating hashtags.

To download all the tags, click "Actions", then "Download tag listing".

Remove tags from an article

Coordinators and administrators can remove tags from an article. Open the article, click "Edit Tags" and click the cross on the tag. The tag is removed from the article, but it stays on the platform.
