Create Categories and Tags

Tags help you structure your knowledge.

Updated on 5 October 2026

Create a category

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right corner, then click "Settings".

  2. In the menu on the left, open "General" and click "Categories".

  3. Click "Add a category".

  4. Enter the name of the category. Each language has its own tab.

  5. In "Scope", choose "Available in all spaces" or "Limited to specific spaces".

  6. Select "Mandatory" if users must add at least one tag of this category. Select "Restricted" if users must not create new tags in it.

  7. Click "Create".

Manage your categories

The "Actions" menu at the top of the page has three more options:

  • "Reorder categories": put the most important categories first, for tagging and search.

  • "Upload translations": translate all tags and categories at once with an Excel file. Read Multilingualism to learn how.

  • "Download tag statistics": download statistics about your tags.

In the list, click the number in the "Tags" column to see the tags of a category. With the menu at the end of each row, you can edit or delete the category.

Deleting a category also deletes its tags. Move the tags you want to keep to another category first.

Create your tags

Once your category exists, you can add tags to it. Users will see these tags as suggestions when they tag the articles they share.

In "Settings", open "General" and click "Tags". There you can:

  • Add a tag with "Add a tag", or several tags at once with "Actions" > "Add several tags".

  • Link tags that mean the same thing with "Actions" > "Edit tag relations". Related tags work as synonyms.

  • Search for a tag, and filter the list by category.

  • Sort the list by clicking a column title.

  • Edit, merge or delete a tag with the menu at the end of its row.

  • Download the list of all tags with "Actions" > "Download tag listing".
