Hard drives utilize technologies such as Full Disk Encryption (FDE) and drive locking to safeguard data at rest. When a hard drive is retired, authorized personnel ensure that the disk is completely erased by writing zeros to it and conducting a multi-step verification process to confirm that the drive contains no residual data. If, for any reason, the drive cannot be erased, it is securely stored until it can be physically destroyed. The physical destruction of disks involves a multi-stage process, starting with a crusher that deforms the drive, followed by a shredder that breaks the drive into small pieces, which are then recycled at a secure facility. Each data center follows a stringent disposal policy, and any deviations from this policy are promptly addressed.
